How to Use the Power Strip Size Calculator

  1. Enter the number of devices you plan to connect.
  2. Input the average wattage per device (check device labels).
  3. Confirm your voltage (default 230V for most regions).
  4. (Optional) Enter maximum allowable load if you have one.
  5. Select your required plug type (2-pin, 3-pin, universal).
  6. Enter the distance from the wall socket to determine cable length.
  7. Click “Calculate” to see recommended wattage, current rating, and cable length.

How to Calculate Power Strip Size (Step-by-Step)

1

Step 1: Calculate Total Load (W)

Total Load (W) = Number of Devices × Average Wattage

Example: Devices = 6, Average Wattage = 120 W → Total Load = 720 W

2

Step 2: Calculate Current Draw (Amps)

Current (A) = Total Load (W) ÷ Voltage (V)

Example (230V system): 720 ÷ 230 = 3.13 A

3

Step 3: Add Safety Margin (25%)

Safe Load = Total Load × 1.25

This ensures your strip is not running at full capacity continuously, preventing overheating.

4

Step 4: Select Recommended Rating

Choose a power strip that exceeds your Safe Load. For a 900W safe load, a 1000W (5A minimum) strip is recommended.

Formulas Used

Total Load (W)
Devices × Wattage
Current (A)
Watts ÷ Voltage
Safe Load
Total Load × 1.25
Conversions
W → A = W ÷ V
A → W = A × V
Feet → Meters = ft × 0.3048

Safety Tips

  • Always leave 25–50% spare capacity.
  • Use surge-protected strips for electronics.
  • Avoid daisy-chaining multiple power strips.
  • Ensure overload and short-circuit protection.
  • Use dedicated wall sockets for high-power appliances.

Power Strip FAQs

How many watts can a standard power strip handle?
Most household strips handle 750W to 2000W depending on rating (5A–15A).
Is it safe to run a power strip at full capacity?
No. Always keep at least 25% spare capacity to avoid overheating.
What is the difference between 5A and 10A power strips?
A 10A strip supports higher wattage loads and is safer for medium to heavy setups.
Should I use surge protection?
Yes, especially for computers, TVs, and sensitive electronics.
